Colby's First Day as a Dentist

It's been a few years since I updated the boys' blog now that they both live in Detroit, but need to document a momentous occasion in the life of Colby.

Today, Colby started his new job at City Dentistry.  This is exciting in and of itself, after three months of unemployment and constant parental nagging/worrying/praying.  His friend David works at this dental clinic as a receptionist, and knew they were looking for help, so suggested Colby apply.   Colby was hired on the spot after his interview on Tuesday, to start work today, two days later.  We asked him what he would be doing at a dental clinic, because he has a long history of interest in the tech field and this was NOWHERE on the Colby BINGO card. Cybersecurity, computer programming, video editing, sound design.  That's where his perpetual interest lies.  Teeth?  That's out of the blue.  Colby had no idea what the job entailed, only that he would be working "in the back".  Money is money, and a job is a job.  After three months of unemployment, any legal job is acceptable.  Whatever "working in the back" means, so be it.    Rob and I watched Colby's avatar on Snapchat all day.  "He's at work!  He's at work!"  10am, 12pm, 2 pm, 5 pm.  Oh wait.  He's still at work.  6pm.  7 pm.  Wow.  That's a long day.  He finally called at 7:30pm, after 9.5 hours.

"THAT WAS CRAZY!"  he said as soon as I answered the phone.  He had worked solid for that 9.5 hours, without a lunch break.  He was starving and drove straight to McDonald's as soon as he got off.  We asked him about his orientation, and what they had him doing.  Apparently, there was NO orientation, and he was taking xrays and doing dental impressions!      He was interacting with patients on his own,  assisting the dentist during procedures, handing him tools that he didn't know the name of, to fix teeth that he didn't know the name of.  He said they kept getting irritated at him that he didn't know what they were talking about when they would ask for things.  And the dentist sent him to the store for a Gatorade, but didn't give Colby his PIN number, so the debit card didn't work and Colby had to buy the drink himself, except that he has literally NO money after being off work for three months so had to call me in a panic and ask for an emergent $5 loan!

Also?  Warren is not a very "good part of town", apparently.  Colby said there were droves upon droves of people, solid, all day - and "most had only one or two teeth".  He said he would anticipate a cavity here or there, but these people... ALL of them... had the most horrible mouths he'd ever seen.  "I'm pretty sure nearly every patient we had was a meth addict."  Nice.  That's great.  "I think they only did one actual cleaning the entire time I was there, because so few of them actually had teeth."  The one dentist was "gruff" and didn't talk much, just got irritated at Colby for not understanding the lingo... on his first day with absolutely no training!  As a computer science major!  At one point, Colby asked him if he should study up on teeth and dental tools in his free time, and the dentist said "don't bother.  You'll learn it just by doing."    OK then.

So, Colby is getting a crash course in the field of dentistry, and has an opportunity to learn a heck of a lot, if he can stand the pace of it all.  I asked him when his next shift was, and he has no idea... no one told him when to come back, or how many hours he would work in a week.  I asked if he filled out paperwork and his W9, and apparently none of that happened either.  He's wearing a mask and gloves and is in people's mouths... on day ONE.  CRAZY.  He said the office manager is a little old Arab lady who frets about people not being busy if they stop to rest.

As we hung up the phone, Rob said "Well, Colby, you know that it can't be so terrible because your friend David works there and he likes it."

"Oh, David complains all the time," Colby said.  "But at the end of my shift, they did tell me that I did better than David did on his first day, because by the end of the day he was crying!"

At least Colby's not in tears.  Just kind of numb and bemused at the whole thing.  Crazy, inner city, sweat-shop dentistry. Wow.

The New Instrument

Quinn was hanging out at a rarely-opened antique store (owned by an eccentric hoarder, is my understanding) and found this beauty.  It's a high-quality melodica in perfect shape.  He had to have it.  I love how it sounds!

17 year old Well Child Stats

 For the Record:

At 17 years and 13 days, Quinn weighs 152.6 pounds (65th%) and is 6'1.5" tall (92%).  That puts his BMI in the 32% overall.  Colby weighs 136.6 pounds (39th%), and is 6'0.5" (89th%), which puts his BMI in the 9th%, which is pretty typical for him.  Quinn got a Men B shot to catch up to Colby.  Otherwise, they are healthy, wealthy, and wise.

He Is Healed

Final follow-up for Colby's clavicle. The doctor was shocked at how much bone has been laid down in the past four weeks.  Compare how much thicker the clavicle is on the left picture as compared to the right. That bone is SOLID.  Colby has been released to hurl himself on a pole at track, which is what he wanted... as long as he lands on the mat ;).  Onward and upward!

One Handsome Dude

Normally I cut the boys' hair, including Rob.  It helps that they have had the same hair cut for the past 8 years at least, and so I have to learn only one style for each.  Prior to that, the boys wore buzz cuts, and I was all over that, too.  So my repertoire has not been challenged at all, despite having three heads to shear every few months.  Colby, though, wanted to shake things up a bit, and did NOT want his mother to do the shaking.  He wanted a REAL hair cut, by an actual barber.  OK then.  Get the guy to "Gentleman's Choice" for a $12 cut!

It turned out great.  I think he looks fabulous.  And he's right... that barber did a far better job than I could!

A Letter from his Coach

I think it's super cool what Coach Johnson does for each of the kids before UP Finals.  These little hand-written words of encouragement and inspiration really do mean a lot to the kids!  So thankful for a good coach.

Quinn's First Resume:

Quinn was one of two students in his Mechatronics class nominated to apply for a job with a local engineering company.  This is super cool, and would be an awesome experience for him!  He went to work on his very first resume.  BEHOLD!  My son "adulting"!

Colby Networking Research Paper

Colby did a little research into Youtube's algorithm, and then came up with this (truly impressive, in my opinion, but I am his mother!) paper.  Documenting here for all posterity.

The Daily Mining Gazette

Gremlins swimmers close season with win

HOUGHTON — In their final swims before the U.P. Finals, the Houghton Gremlins swim teams wanted to close the season out strong.

Both teams did just that, with the girls defeating Ishpeming-Negaunee 100-61 and the boys winning 134-28 on Tuesday.

Looking back on the season afterwards, coach Erik Johnson fought back tears thinking about the efforts put forth by every swimmer this season.

“This by far has been one of the most unique seasons that I have ever been a part of, but the kids never cease to amaze me with the work they put in each and every day,” he said. “We are really looking forward to U.P. Finals being held in Marquette on March 12 and 13; one more chance for these kids to shine!”

On the girls’ side, Leah Komarzec won the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly. Other individual winners included Elli Wagner, who won the 200-yard individual medley, Eva Anderson, who won the 500-yard freestyle, and Cassandra Steffensen, who took the top spot in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Johnson was proud of the effort put forth by all of the girls Tuesday. Getting more strong swims from the leadership group of Anderson and Chloe Neves, both seniors, was a big part of the team’s success.

“On the girls side, we had a lot of kids dropping time,” he said. “It was our senior night, and we have five seniors this year who are all on the girls team. Eva Anderson and Chloe Neves are both captains this year, and have been with the program for all four years, so they will leave a big hole for us next year.”

Three more seniors who had an impact on the team were Emma Jenkins, Madison Thomas and Adele Dognon, who were also a part of building the culture that Johnson stresses as being so important year after year.

“Emma Jenkins, Madison Thomas and Adele Dognon are also leaving the program this year,” he said. “It is always an emotional night for them and the rest of the team. We always say it is a family, so it is hard to go through all those lasts with kids, but they all made a huge impact on the program and leave it in a better place than where it was.”

On the boys’ side, Archer Olson had a strong day with wins in the 200-yard individual medley and the 500-yard freestyle. Conner Holombo followed suit, winning the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle. Davin Evans was the third two-event winner, earning victories in the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard breaststroke.

Quinn Aho, who has been honing his diving skills all season, won again.

“On the boys side, Quinn Aho bested his previous school record in diving, so I’m excited to see what he can do at U.P. Finals,” Johnson said.

Ty Haataja won the 100-yard backstroke. Saar Bar-Ziv won the 200-yard freestyle.

On top of the wins, two more swimmers qualified for the U.P. Finals. Rhea Bar-Ziv, whose twin brother won the 200-yard freestyle, qualified next to him, which made for a special moment for both of the boys.

Oliver Anderson, a freshman, swam an impressive finals time in the 100-yard backstroke, shaving nearly six seconds off his seed time, which also earned him a trip to the U.P. Finals.

“We had two new qualifiers on the boys side, Rhea Bar-Ziv and Oliver Anderson,” said Johnson.  “This was the last chance we had to get kids qualified, and they really stepped it up to make the cut. Rhea swam in the 200 free right next to his twin brother, Saar, so it was awesome to see Saar push Rhea to make that qualifying time.

“Oliver, who is a freshman, dropped almost six seconds in the backstroke to make the cut. Those were both some special swims and the whole team was so excited for each of them.”

Johnson, still fighting back tears of joy, expressed his utter joy at how hard each of his swimmers worked throughout the season.

“They all work hard towards a goal and the best part is watching them celebrate their teammates’ success like it is their own,” he said.

Home Meet Against Ishpeming

Quinn did a little swimming on a Freestyle medley this meet.  He's improving his dive score by nearly 20 points a meet!  WOW.  He's beat his personal record, and was voted "Athlete of the Meet".  Go Quinn!

Home Meet against Kingsford

These kids are cramming all the meets they can into this shortened season.  Most weeks they have three meets scheduled, which is... busy... to say the least.  Quinn is just having a great season.  Maybe the intensity is working for him?

Another Swim Meet

Quinn is ON FIRE with diving this year.  So thankful these kids get to have a season.  Colby is disappointed he can't participate with his broken clavicle.  He'll miss the entire season.  But he comes to every single home meet and cheers on his team, all the same, which is pretty cool.  Swimmers are good kids :).

Gremlins swim team sweeps Ishpeming

The Houghton High School swimming and diving team improved to 1-1 on the season after a big win on Feb. 2 against the Ishpeming-Neguanee team in Negaunee.

The Gremlin girls won with a score of 96-68. Boys took first with a 103-41 victory.

According to Houghton head coach Erik Johnson, the win was quite an improvement from their first meet-a loss against Marquette at home.

“I was very pleased with their effort,” he said. “The first away meet can always be a little intimidating for our new swimmers, but they really handled it well. We had a lot of kids trying events that they hadn’t done before, and even though they weren’t comfortable with them, they went after them and gave it their all.

For the Houghton girls, Eva Anderson won the 200-meter freestyle stroke. Leah Komarzec took first in the 50 and 100-meter freestyle heats. Chloe Neves won the 500-meter freestyle, and Claire Issacson took first in the 110-meter breaststroke.

“With Eva’s win, she qualified for finals in the 200 free,” Johnson said. “Chloe really stepped up and swam well in the 500 free. It was also good to see Leah qualify in both the events she swam. The girls are starting to realize the potential that they have.”

On the boys’ side, the Gremlin swimmers were equally successful. They captured first in all but one of their events. Davin Evans won the 200-meter freestyle and the 100-meter butterfly. Archer Olson took first in the 200-meter individual medley and the 100-meter backstroke. Ty Haataja placed first in both the 50 meter and 500- meter freestyle heats. Saar Bar-Ziv won the 100-meter freestyle and Quinn Aho won the diving competition.

“Davin, Ty and Archer have been a solid group and really drive the pace in practice which carries over into meets,” said Johnson. It seems like no matter what we throw at them they enjoy the challenge and really rise to the occasion.”

He added that all his swimmers and divers have been working extremely hard in practice, and he hopes that will continue as the season progresses.

He said, “I personally can’t wait for practices and watch them step up to the challenges we put out before them.”

The Budding Chef

Mama was too tired to cook, so Quinn took over the kitchen. He created a marinade by following a Gordon Ramsey recipe, and then broiled himself a delicious steak.  Then he made homemade steak fries as a side dish.   Super impressive.
